Work Permits

CHANGES IN WORK PERMITS

The information listed below was received regarding work permits for minors under 18 years old. The new Youth Employment Law was in effect as of July 1, 2021.

Today Indiana’s new youth-employment law goes fully into effect for employers who employ five or more minor employees (under age 18). Effective today, Indiana eliminates work permits*, and requires all employers with five or more minor employees to begin using the Indiana Department of Labor’s Youth Employment System (YES) to track and report minor-employee information.

YES has been available since June 1, and more than 2,700 employers have already set up their accounts and collectively registered more than 27,000 minor employees. If you are impacted by the change in Indiana’s youth employment law, please visit the link below and set up your account today.

Employers who fail to comply with the new law that goes into effect today could face penalties of up to $400 per infraction, per minor employee.

YES is simple and easy to use. You may access the app via your smart device, such as your smartphone or tablet, as well as your desktop or laptop. Once you’ve set up your employer profile, you can enter your minor data – name, age and hire date – within minutes.

To learn more about YES, and set up your account today, please visit the Bureau of Youth Employment website at: www.in.gov/dol/youthemployment.htm.
