Failing 0 0 0-50 F The student does not exhibit mastery at the 70% level on the appropriate state standards as evidenced on standards-based assessments. Any student who falls below 50% at the end of a semester will receive an F.

Students will receive an Academic Education grade (letter grade) which will reflect their knowledge/skills of the Indiana Academic Standards or district curriculum for each subject area. Assessment data accumulated throughout the course will be used to calculate Grade Point Average. All classroom assessments, assignments (including homework), and activities will be directly linked to the Indiana Academic Standards. Grades accumulate over the course of the semester.

  • Homework will account for no more than 20% of a student’s grade.
  • Final exams will be given at semester’s end and will account for no more than 20% of a student’s grade.
  • Parents will be encouraged to track student grades and missing assignments weekly through PEP. Each teacher is expected to enter all grades no later than Wednesday of the following week from when the assignment was collected.
  • Students will receive Progress Report printouts at 4 1/2-week mark during each grading period.
  • Report Cards will be mailed home at the end of each semester in December and June.
  • The dominant component of each grade will be performance on the standards-based assessments. Homework and other factors should only have the effect of raising or lowering a student’s grade by a minimal amount.
  • The grade of “I” will be issued only at the end of each semester for students who have less than a 70% and would typically earn a failing grade, but have the potential to demonstrate mastery as determined by the classroom teacher. Students who receive an “I” for incomplete must work with the classroom teacher after school or during academy period to complete additional assignments or retake assessments to demonstrate mastery. This work must be done during the credit intervention timeline, which is until February 1st for the Semester I report card grades and one week following the end of the school year for the Semester II report card grades.
  • The grade of “F” will be issued when:
    • there has been no significant attempt on the part of the student
    • the student has not achieved at or above the 70% level by the end of the semester
    • within 4 weeks after the end of the semester if the student has been assigned to the credit recovery program.
  • Extra Opportunities Versus Extra Credit: Students will be encouraged and allowed to raise their level of performance by revising and extending work done on the course standards as directed by the individual teacher rather than doing unrelated “extra-credit” work that artificially inflates the student grade

In addition to an Academic Grade, students will be assessed over School Citizenship. Students will be assessed over their ability to act responsibly, behave appropriately, and work diligently while at school. This will be reported through the comments section of the report card.
Finally, the report card will record a student’s accumulating Attendance Record.

Intervention: A key component to the assessment system will be required intervention for students not yet meeting academic standards. This will include…

  • A student continuing to do work until it is proficient.
  • Students not yet meeting standards may be assigned to the Credit Recovery Program. Other interventions may occur also during and after regular school hours.
